Policy name Car Hire Excess Insurance – single or multi-trip policy.
Price European cover from £1.90 per day, worldwide cover from £2.90 per day.
Number of trips/days covered Single or multi-trip policies available. Single trip policies can cover from 1 to 180 days. Multi-trip policies can cover multiple rentals during the relevant year, each lasting up to 31 days.
Area covered European or worldwide policies available.
What is covered? Covers the excess on theft of and damage to the rental vehicle including the undercarriage, windows and tyres.
Amount of cover Excess up to the maximum of £2,000 (or equivalent in local currency) per claim and £3,000 per rental agreement in total.
Multiple drivers covered? Yes.

The policy covers the policyholder, plus any other persons named on the car rental agreement (as long as those other people would have been eligible to buy this insurance themselves).

Rentals in home country covered? Yes, for an additional premium.
Rentals near home covered? Yes, if home country premium paid.
Restrictions on drivers’ ages? Drivers must be between 21 and 74.
Additional items included Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) and Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) policies are also available (useful for rentals in the USA and Canada).
Small print/exclusions to beware of You are not covered for:

  • The rental of “Expensive or Exotic” vehicles not considered to be a conventional and usual rental vehicle, and “Antique” vehicles, which are over 20 years old or which have not been manufactured for 10 years or more.
  • Any vehicle with a retail purchase price in excess of US$ 50,000.
  • The rental of certain vehicles namely, motor homes, trailers or caravans, vans, trucks, non-passenger carrying vehicles, vehicles that carry more than 9 people including the driver, motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, off-road vehicles and recreational vehicles (unless specifically agreed by the insurers).
  • Losses occurring from driving whilst not on a public highway (except when travelling to/from accommodation that is only accessible by unmade road and, in these circumstances, due care and attention must be exercised to minimise risk of any damage to the vehicle.).

The policy must have been purchased before the start of the car hire agreement that you wish to cover.

Procedure for claiming Contact AXA Assistance Claims Centre Ltd within 31 days of the end of the rental agreement to notify loss and request a claim form to be sent to you by email, fax or post. You must complete, sign, date and return the claim form with all supporting documentation requested.
