What is covered? Covers excess on theft, and damage to the rental vehicle including the undercarriage, windows and tyres.
Amount of cover Amount of cover depends on policy chosen. For example, in the ‘Annual European (31 days)’ cover is up to £2,000. In the ‘UK Unlimited’ cover is up to £1,000. In the ‘Luxury Europe’ cover is up to £5,000.
Multiple drivers covered? Yes.

The policy covers the policyholder, plus any other persons named on the certificate of insurance and the car rental agreement (as long as those other people would have been eligible to buy this insurance themselves).

Rentals in home country covered? Yes, if you have one of the UK policies.
Rentals near home covered? Yes, if you have one of the UK policies. For other policies rentals must be more than 150km from your home.
Restrictions on drivers’ ages? Drivers must be between 21 and 74. Separate policies are available for drivers between 75 and 85.

You are not covered for:

  • The rental of “Expensive or Exotic” vehicles not considered to be a conventional and usual rental vehicle, and “Antique” vehicles, which are over 20 years old or which have not been manufactured for 10 years or more.
  • Any vehicle with a retail purchase price in excess of US$ 100,000.
  • The rental of certain vehicles, namely: motor homes, camper vans, trailers or caravans, trucks, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, off-road vehicles, recreational vehicles and passenger vans and vehicles with more than 9 seats.
  • Losses occurring from driving whilst not on a public highway.

The policy must have been purchased before the start of the car hire agreement that you wish to cover.

Procedure for claiming You must provide written notice of accidents, proceedings or any other events that may give rise to a claim to the claims office within 31 days. You must send in:

  1. Copy of your excess protection policy from carhireinsurance4u.com.
  2. Copy of your rental agreement.
  3. A copy of your charge receipt (if separate from the rental agreement).
  4. If the incident by law requires the attendance of the police, you must send a copy of the police report.
  5. Your copy of the car hire company accident damage report.
  6. Invoices / receipts / other documents confirming the amount you have paid in respect of accident / damage / loss etc. for which the car hire company holds you responsible.
  7. Copy of your credit card statement showing payment of the damages claimed.
  8. Copy of the driving licence of the person driving the rented vehicle involved in the accident (the driver).
  9. Name and address of your bank together with the sort code and account details. This will facilitate reimbursement as the insurance company prefers to make the payment directly to your bank.
